lsmod |grep fb produces no output here. But I managed to solve the problem. The contents of /etc/usplash.conf were initially xres=1280 yres=1024, which the laptop display can't handle. I changed that to xres=1280 yres=800, and then had to execute sudo update-usplash-theme usplash-theme-ubuntu,
