Just to let you guys know, this was an oversight in compiz. It very
strictly would never let your panels get focus, this was relaxed to fix
such applets. No need to fix anything in your applet. :)

Unfortunately, I don't use Ubuntu anymore but Debian Testing.
This is currently version 0.1.19-2, and activating compiz from the
command line does not reveal the bug.
Compiz itself is version 0.6.3~git20071222.061ff159-1.
I see you're the Debian
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly Hervé. I have tested this
again on Gutsy and I cannot reproduce the bug anymore with the version
that's currently in gutsy. So I'll close this bug.
Feel free to feel a bug in Debian though if you notice anything unusual
