kernel direct mapping tables up to ...
and than the system starts the whole services ...
but without the splashscreen :)

when the grub menu appears could you edit your boot selection and remove the
word splash
from the end of the line and boot and tell me if you see anything displayed
before getting the login prompt

same here on ubuntu 7.10 (finally) 64bit
my system: vmware workstation 6 (2 cpus (intel core2 6320) 10gb hdd and
512mb ram)
after install every time i start the system it says Starting up...
after ~30 seconds it says kernel alive and shows the boot splash
everything works fine after boot ...
