The original problem has been addressed.
Paul, your problem may be that the depmod call in the post installation script
has failed. Please report a new bug report with more information, if
I've had problems with vboxdrv in Hardy. I can't modprobe the module:
FATAL: Module vboxdrv not found. However, I can insmod
/lib/modules/2.6.24-12-generic/misc/vboxdrv.ko and it works fine.

Re-opening.
You need to add the #DEBHELPER# marker to debian/inst, so the init script
actually gets installed by dh_installinit.
This affects loading the module after installation and during boot.
