Noticed a new Linux driver recently on Realtek's website. I have
recently uninstalled Ubuntu because of this problem, so someone else
should try it.

I am running 2.6.22-14-generic #1 currently and still have the
problem. Our laptops use the same chipset, in fact, they are almost
identical (running MX3414). I just tested again to make sure last
night, and the problem still applies as soon as I join a WEP network.

All I did to get it working was fully upgrade the kernel. There was an
update to 2.6.22-14 a couple weeks ago, and I decided to try it again
and it worked this time. Does the linked duplicate describe your
problem, too, Jayhawk?

I'm running the RTL8185 as well. I just downloaded and installed a new
copy of 7.10 and I still have this problem. Viaken, what did you do to
fix this? Similarly, without WAP or WEP, I have no problems, but with
encryption enabled, I get the hard freeze along with the blinking caps
lock light.

i can report that ndiswrapper does work for this card in encrypted
networks, my first assumption that it froze was incorrect.

Ok, this is definitely related to encryption. ndiswrapper works fine for
me on an unencrypted link. r8180 never associates with the AP.
So, either wpasupplicant or (my guess) the kernel crypto modules.

Ndiswrapper seems to freeze as soon as the keyring manager window pops
up.
However, it is not a complete hard lock.

I appear to have this issue as well in my gateway laptop. (mx6433), the
card i have is the RTL 8185 as well, in feisty i am using it with
ndiswrapper, the r818x driver was an option, i havn't had the
oppurtunity to test ndiswrapper but i know that when i connect to a
network with WEP enabled it har
