My x61s doesn't have a cdrom drive, so it is not that easy. I tried to
put one of my old cdrom drives into an USB enclosure, but either the CD-
rom drive doesn't work or it is not possible to boot from this USB

Alpha2 has been released. It contains an updated version of the kernel.

Sorry for the delay. I tried to try the new kernel by following steps
1)-4) above. In step 3) I get this:

I also get dropped to BusyBox (initramfs) after doing network upgrade
from 7.04 to 7.10. Before upgrading, the 7.10 live CD worked fine. Now,
starting with 2.6.20-16 instead of 2.6.22-14 works ok. This is with
ASUS Z62FM laptop, Core 2 Duo, and System76 drivers installed.
