I have a similar problem:
When using the mouse wheel over the volume control applet to change the volume,
sometimes it appears as mute (white X in a red square) but it is not. Just
turn the wheel again and it appears correct.

Well it's not letting me upload. They show that the volume control is in
the right output and that in volume control the volume is not muted.
When you right click the icon, the mute checkbox is checked and you cant
uncheck it. Also this all is in feisty.
