Ok, so the good news is that the issues are gone after an upgrade to
16.04 Beta.
I switched back to version before installing plasma 5.5.4 and then
upgraded to 16.04 Beta with
sudo ppa-purge ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports
kubuntu-devel-release-upgrade
Everthing seems to work so far.

ozmill - thanks for confirming that this issue is relevant also for
upgrades to 16.04
Kubuntu release managers - if this not gonna be fixed by the release, at
least it must be noticed as a known issue with a workaround.

I confirm the issue still persists.
Also it seems the problem is related to the video card, it happens on my
desktop but not on the laptop (which has a different video card)

I solved this (after about 14 hours...) by:
sudo ppa-purge ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports
Now I am again on Plasma 5.4.3
Maybe one day I will try again to update via the Backports PPA and
replace the Xsession file.

default user from sddm.conf file result was login screen with horizontal

with working mouse cursor.
killing the X by Ctrl-Alt-Backspace and logging in again, with the same user -
still works.
