I recently enabled the option in the gnome-tweak-tool called "Show
location of cursor" so now when I press CTRL I get a nice animation
coming from my cursor. However if I have any text selected when I press
CTRL, until I have released the button, the text appears

This maybe a theme issue, I can't reproduce this in xenial with the
default Adwaita theme

Well, I'm using the Numix theme, maybe you should test it with that. It
still shouldn't be doing this with one of the pre-installed themes though.
