Please file a new bug if compiz doesn't work in Intrepid with the
default open-source drivers.

only difference in my case, i skipped the compiz after the yes in the added
line
might make no difference
mine works fine
sorry no experience with sortcuts

Well, if I add the line
SKIP_CHECKS=yes compiz
into /etc/xdg/compiz/compiz-manager then I can start compiz and it seems to
work, but
1. When trying to run compiz via System--Preferences--Appearance, Visual
Effects is stills displays Desktop Effects Can't be enabled error
no clue why the compiz check, blacklists the card
but the test can be disabled easily

mine is at /etc/xdg/compiz/compiz-manager
add the line and it starts
use the System--Preferences--Appearance, Visual Effects
System--Preferences--Desktop Effects
Same problem on a Radeon Mobility X700
both with fglrx and ati driver
$ compiz
