if you are able to log in with your normal user account you cam use sudo to change things as needed. you usally never use the root account, especially not in a graphically. and if you can not even log in using your normal account you can still boot in single user mode. single user mode gets you a

I'll make note of that for the unlikely chance it happens again. Sadly as it was a machine required for work it had to be rebuilt a few weeks after the bug appeared just to be able to get on with work. At the time no solution for it was found by myself or anyone else that tried to help with the
