I am currently running Kubuntu Hardy development and for about a month I have
not had that problem. Before it used to happen quite frequently - at least once
a day.
May be it got fixed by some of the updates.

When I request to remove the network-manager packages, adept will also remove
knetworkmanager and network-manager-kde which

is 2.1MB.
Doing sudo apt-get remove network-manager --purge auso apt-get
install network-manager fixed the problem for me.

Some more details.

The problem seems to arise actually from the interaction between
KNetworkManager (front end) and the NetworkManager
(back end).
The CPU goes 100% when KNetworkManager is not running or has been
killed/closed. This seems to be fixed by restarting the KNetworkManager as
It seems it fixes as my sysyem is not at 100%.
But I still cannot see the friendly icon in the tray showing the connection
details.
