Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

I have a dual opteron 64bit system that I've been upgrading since 6.04.
In the last year I put a 1600x1200 20 inch LCD screen on it. The
xserver-xorg-video-ati driver had no problem with it in 7.04. I don't
recal for sure if I had the same monitor with 6.10, though I think I
did. lspci report my graphics card like this:

05:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO]
(rev 01)
05:00.1 Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO]
(Secondary) (rev 01)

With the upgrade to Gutsy (7.10) I can't get this high resolution. In
fact, the only way I've been able to get 1280x1024 is by using the
vesafb driver rather than the ATI specific driver. X always reports
that there is no such supported resolution. I've entered the correct
horiz and vertical frequencies. I even found an old log and entered the
modeline, to no avail.

I've installed xserver-xorg-video-ati_6.7.195+git20071020tv_amd64.deb
that was recommended on some posting found through Google, but it made
no difference.
