One followup... I plugged into an external USB wifi adapter and the nm-
applet suddenly reappeared in my system tray.

Can confirm this is still a bug on Mate Desktop Environment 1.12.1.
No Wi-Fi/Networking widget in the system try and running "sudo nm-
applet" causes this response:

Unable to launch nm-applet using the i3 window manager. No issues with
XFCE. Same error as reported previously:
