went to system services and as admin restarted hal.
:~$ lshal lshal.txt
now worked. see attached.
note DVD drive is now spinning but not automounting

I should note that I am using Kubuntu, not gnome, so I went straight to
step 9.
I then came across this error.
:~$ lshal lshal.txt
Could not initialise connection to hald.
Normally this means the HAL daemon
