Thank you for your bug report. I think you can't use desktop effects
with the vesa driver, you should install a 3d driver for your card.

In fact - I am stupid.
I was playing with dpkg-reconfigure xsrver-xorg a long time ago and I
set videocard vesa. In Gutsy Intel is supoorted and after reconfiguring
it again, it is working like a charm :-)
