I'm the package maintainer in Debian. The current dependencies for
automysqlbackup are:

default-mysql-client | virtual-mysql-client,

so there's no such thing as a dependency on Postfix. The only thing that
may pull more, is the Recommends on
I realize that this is a really old post, but I see a status confirmed,
but no further action. The "bug" still persists though, since I am
testing an install script and figured I must have done something wrong,
because the installing of AutoMySQLBackup also installed Postfix. But

This is a super useful and important package. Backing up MySQL easily on
a recurring basis is super important.
Running Postfix on a server securely is quite a big burden and should
not be a requirement.
In the meantime, if anyone can tell me how to safely disable postfix
(despite reboot) while
