I get the same problem on a fairly fresh 17.10 desktop installation on a
Lenovo P51 laptop. Whenever I install a new kernel, the dkms
installation calls plymouth --ping which hangs forever. It seems killing
plymouth in these cases will progress the build, but it has to be done
multiple times per dk

rebooted the server today.
Still asme issue: Need to press the power button for the server to
restart: The system hangs at last shutdown step, "Will now restart" is
the last message displayed at the console.

So, I installed plymouth-disabler today and rebooted the server.
Though, for some reason (Dell related?) I had to press the power button
to shut my server down, it booted unattended.
So, it seems plymouth-disabler helped in this issue.
