I got the same error yesterday. I installed mariadb in the past, but forgot about this and then tried to use and install mysql. My solution was a complete uninstall of mysql and mariadb and a clean install of mariadb. Especially the fact that Gerardo tries to connect to a mysql server, but

Users might have blocked access for debian-sys-maint somehow, simply because they don't want the maintainer scripts to have access to the database. I don't think this is an invalid choice, so we might consider giving a warning instead of error in the specific case of access denied. -- You
