unity-control-center is meant to be used under unity, does it work
better if you start it with XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=Unity unity-control-
center?

update: adding sudo solved it - 'sudo unity-control-center'. I see all
the icons now. but I suspect it's not a good idea.
