Yes, the kernel 4.4.0.36 it's working fine.
I just uploaded apport-collect witj the original 4.4.0.38 kernel.

Based on I'm suspecting that it's this commit from upstream stable:
db9f727 fs/cifs: make share unaccessible at root level mountable
I'll make a test kernel with that reverted for testing.

To confirm - this problem appeared in 4.4-0.38, i.e. the mount worked
