My Calibre (under Ubuntu) is behaviong perfectly well. now.
Since reporting the bug, I upgraded fro Ubuntu 16 to 17, which involves
replacing lots of shared libs. Thus, I can't discern what, in
particular, "did the trick".

My statement that calibre 2.72 works okay under Ubuntu 16.04 on a
machine with generic VGA graphics is WRONG! (I mixed up version
numbers.) In fact, the behavior is like that described above on a
machine using the NVIDIA graphics card.
