Public bug reported:

Server is an HP DL380 G4p, 2GB RAM, HP SCSI RAID controller.

OS: Dapper 6.06 LTS

OpenLDAP - slapd 2.2.26-5ubuntu2.2

When under significant load for extended periods of time, the LDAP
server ceases to respond to requests and logs the following in
/var/log/syslog:

Nov 19 10:23:03 core02 slapd[15476]: warning: cannot open
/etc/hosts.allow: Too many open files

Restarting slapd clears the problem for approx 24hrs.

I have tried increasing the number of system file handles with sysctl to
1.4 million but still the error occurs after approx 24hrs of use. I have
also tried lowering the idle timeout in slapd.conf, however the problem
still recurrs.

One suggestion from the OpenLDAP list is to rebuild slapd as per these
instructions from the FAQ:
http://www.openldap.org/faq/data/cache/1126.html

I don't know if this is something the package maintainer is willing to
consider, of if I am going to have to roll my own slapd from here on in?

** Affects: openldap2.2 (Ubuntu)
     Importance: Undecided
         Status: New
