That is very strange. Simply reinstalling grub without making any other
changes should not have had any different outcome. An EFI system must
have an EFI system partition mounted in /boot/efi. The original error
message is complaining that it can not find that.

I did not have a special /boot directory in my partition table so boot
was part of the root (/) mount point. The root partition is on sdb1 if
that helps at all. When investigating this I did have the /boot/grub
directory, but was unabled to find the i386 directory in that tree.
To work around
"error: cannot find EFI directory." means you do not have an EFI system
partition, or that you do not have it mounted. I assume you installed
the original system in EFI mode. Is your /boot/efi mounted?
