Public bug reported:

gdm fails to start due to Ubuntu customizations. Ubuntu has modified
the behavior of gnome-session such that ubuntu.session is the default.
When gdm launches gnome-session to start the greeter, this results in
gnome-session trying to launch unity instead of gnome-shell.

One workaround that I have proven works is to delete /usr/share/gnome-
sessions/sessions/ubuntu.session with a symlink to gnome.session. This
allows gdm to start up correctly and I can then login to a gnome-shell
session.

Another possible workaround would be to patch gdm to launch "gnome-
session --session=gnome", similarly to how
/usr/share/xsessions/gnome.desktop was patched.
