Everything stored by zfs. It's the mount point. So, I can't free it up,
I can unmount but is this the correct procedure to upgrade? I definitely
don't want to lose my data.

The pertinent part of the log shows that the mount failed because /tank
directory was not empty which is expected behaviour.
