I don't know if it is related but I've also noticed that I cannot use
the command "videoinfo" in a grub console if I have the virtual machine
setup to use the VGA driver but I can if I use the QXL driver.

I think this is likely VM setup: I have installed a new system with the
20170919 image (a Thinkpad T450p), and the plymouth screen responds
correctly. I will try to reproduce this in a VM here.

This what I see when I return to tty7, yes ubuntu was my passphrase.
