Indeed I can confirm that this works, because the autopkgtests for
chromium-browser rely on chromedriver, and they consistently pass on all
supported architectures, see http://autopkgtest.ubuntu.com/packages
/chromium-browser.

In general, if you build ChromeDriver using source code corresponding to
an official stable or beta release of Chrome, it is expected to work
correctly with that release of Chrome. I.e., the ChromeDriver built from
source for 70.0.3538.45 is expected to work correctly with Chrome
version
And the upcoming chromium 70 requires chromedriver 2.42, but the source
tarball (for 70.0.3538.45) contains 2.41.

requires chromedriver 2.41, but the source tarball contains 2.40.
