Hmm, alright, well while it's not perfect it sounds like the original
issue of not changing resolutions is now fixed so I'm closing the bug.
Those other secondary issues should be reported as separate bugs;
obviously they're unrelated to this. They should be reported against

Trying the Jaunty Alpha-3 Live CD in VMWare Player gives similar results
to my comment above - the refresh rate is listed as 0Hz, but making a
change and clicking Apply does change the resolution.
Although this does work there are a couple of minor problems: the
(virtual) monitor appears as
Would you mind testing to see if this bug is still an issue in Jaunty?
CD ISOs are available from http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/jaunty/ .
If it is still an issue, then perhaps we can forward it upstream.

Unfortunately I can't really test it any more. My VMWare licenses have
timed out long ago, and nowadays I only use kvm, which works well (and
doesn't have this problem either).

An update to my comment above: with the Hardy Beta Live CD the Screen
Resolution application still lists the only refresh rate as 0Hz, but
clicking on the Apply button does work, so it's once again possible to
change resolution on-the-fly when running the Hardy Live CD in VMWare
Player.

Running the Live CD in VMware Player 2.02 exhibits this problem.
With Hardy Alpha 5 it was still possible to change to a higher
resolution (I used 1024x768) in the System=Preferences=Screen
Resolution application, despite the fact that the only Refresh Rate
listed was 0Hz.
With Alpha 6 the new
I experienced this bug in Vmware Workstation 6.0.2 build-59824.
You can get a higher solution by installing the vmware tools into the
guest system.
During vmware-install.pl you are asked for the solution

I have installed Hardy Heron Alpha 4 on VmWare 5.5, but still get this bug. I
cannot seem to configure X to support a larger resolution than 800x600, while
my physical screen supports larger resolutions.
I have added a attachement wich contains the VESA entry's from
/etc/X11/Xorg.0.log.

[hardy] only get 800x600 in vmware
Ok, I can confirm the resolution issue. Dexconf failing to write an
xorg.conf is now fixed, but it doesn't fix this bug. The server uses
800x600 since it defaults to hsync range of 31.50-37.90kHz, and vrefresh
range 50-70 Hz.
I'll investigate it further.

when I write an xorg.conf manually:

then I still get 800x600, for the same reason, see attached log. No
change when I add a Monitor section.
