I assume you have read /usr/share/doc/hdapsd/README.Debian and patched
your kernel accordingly?

Cannot start hdapsd on Thinkpad T60

I want to report the same problem. here is my environment:
Ubuntu: Gutsy
Kernel: 2.6.22-14-generic
/etc/default/hdapsd:
DISK=sda
OPTIONS=
lsmod | grep hda
hdaps 10184 0
/etc/init.d/hdapsd start
* Not starting hdapsd: /sys/block/sda/queue/protect does not exist
Filesystem
First of all you need to edit /etc/defaults/hdaps file and change
DISK=hda to DISK=sda, because thinkpad uses SATA drives. But I am
not sure if that will fix it because for me sda/queue/protect does not
exist either.

I know. I should have mentioned that I already tried that. Same
response after changing DISK to sda in /etc/init.d/hdapsd as well as
/etc/defaults/hdaps.
