I'm not sure I follow you when you say that your password doesn't help?
Do you mean that it tells you that your password is incorrect? This is
the same password that you use to login with, so if you're logged in, it
must be the correct password.
The only other possibility is that when the
that window, it goes back to the Update window again. It keeps going
back and forth from these two windows.

Can you try the following - it should help figure out what's going
wrong:
- Open a terminal window (Applications - Accessories - Terminal).
- Type sudo aptitude update sudo aptitude full upgrade (without the
quotes).
- Enter your password when prompted.
- Copy and paste the output into this bug
