I checked it on my box and the QMPlayerWidget does return the correct
values but KXineWidget has issues with the detection of the length.
The workaround would be to switch to QMPlayerWidget while importing the
audio files or to manually disable transcoding of the ac3 stream.

Thank you I received the bug report.
I am using the MediaBackend to determine media properties. So if you
select MPlayerWidget, QDVDAuthor will use mplayer to determine the
length of the ac3 file.
Check the output of
mplayer -identify new.ac3

ac3 file does indeed show up as only 0 seconds long and not supported.
