This bug is fixed with 2.3.1 release of OpenOffice. This release is not
available yet in ubuntu repositories so I opened bug #179301 to ask it
for the next ubuntu release ( and maybe that it will also be backported
to ubuntu Gutsy release ).

Hello, I have no intention of question your importance table, but because of
this bug I was nearing to suspend a math test!
So make an advert when trying to export to pdf, or something similar, would be
great.

I forgot to say : You can use the PDF printer in Linux Ubuntu Gutsy to
print your file and you'll find a PDF file in your ubuntu documents, in
the PDF folder. Hope it helps you :)

joan : Thanks for your comment. I set the importance to low since this
bug can easily be worked around with the included PDF printer in Linux
Ubuntu Gutsy and since it affect a limited number of characters.
However, I know that bug importance is subject to debate but it will not
have impact here
Thanks for this bug report.
In order to get necessary details to reproduce and test that bug, can you
attach a copy of the file you converted into PDF?
Can you also say which characters aren't displayed properly in the resulting
PDF?

Confirmed! I can reproduce it there using openoffice.org
1:2.3.0-1ubuntu5.3 .
Like you said, this problem only happens with the export function of
openoffice. There's no problem when printing the file with a PDF
printer.
Status set to triaged and importance set to low.
