But Ubuntu is now super slow. This is my most important machine and it is
now no longer usable :( :(
Will have to get a new machine and install 16.

You must not only remove the PPA entries but also remove the software
installed from these PPAs or revert to versions from the official Ubuntu
repositories. That's why Brian recommended to use ppa-purge instead of
just removing them with the Software Properties tool.

Thank you very much for the prompt response.
I removed ALL my PPAs under Other Software then tried again thrice to
upgrade.
Same outcome: upgrade fails with the warning about PPAs.
