There are some general/simple solutions:
* Avoid gradients that stretch over a long distance (the screen
height); or
* Use dithering to hide/blend the banding. This would require some
programming effort.

We already reduced the bands with this newer login screen. Previously we
had a SVG with the gradient information which was then rendered by gnome
shell.
So if I understand you correctly, there is no general solution for all
kind of resolutions?

It's a math issue. To avoid the steps being bigger than one pixel you'd
need to choose two colours that are more than the screen height values
appart in 3D colour space.
So in decimal RGB coordinates the colours are:
#6D2169 = (109,33,105)
#370026 = (55,0,38)
