Public bug reported: This bug occurred on a previous installation of Ubuntu that was also Cosmic gnome. That one was used for years and was originally 16.04. I reinstalled Ubuntu and the bug still occurs. It might have to do with a hardware button I have on my System76 laptop: a sleep button. It makes the computer's hard-disk sound like it stopped spinning, which I think is true. The same happens when I close the laptop lid. This also sometimes causes the Ubuntu dock to show on the login screen, which is a separate bug, but may be related.
