Same problem with the fonts here. soon I will reïnstall Kubuntu-KDE4
when hardy wil be released (the day after tomorow). I'd try many things
to find out wat was the problem but nothing I'd try solved the problem.
The problem for me started when I chose anaother theme then the default one in
KDE4'
Same here, I did a fresh install from the alpha 4 and then I installed
kde4-core, reboot and that happened.

I did a Ctrl-Alt-Backspace, reload KDE4 and fonts seem to be fix (even
after reboots). :-)

KDE 3.5.8 was previously installed, but after a complete reinstall and
update the Problem disappeared.
I suggest it was a packaging fault. I wasn`t able to reproduce it in an
up-to-date hardy heron.

Did you install any other version of kde prior to installing kde 4?
If so then try creating a new user and running only kde 4 do not run anyother
desktop environment.
Also, Have you tried changing the fonts in kde 4? Perhaps there is a missing
effect or package that kde 4 did not install.
