Public bug reported:

gcc version 4.2 in hardy segfaults when compiling this:

int main() {
  return 0;
}

with this error:

$ gcc-4.2 foo.c
gcc-4.2: Internal error: Segmentation fault (program cc1)

I'd also like to point out that although I can also install gcc-4.1, gcc 
doesn't seem to be managed by alternatives, so I had to change the /usr/bin/gcc 
symlink by hand to use gcc-4.1...
