I've been using various Snaps for about 5 months now, and I've never
seen any of those UI things appear.

Perhaps the "Updating snaps..." status is misleading. What update-
manager is really doing here is checking for updates, not the actual
updates themselves. If updates are found, the status will change to
"Removing snap x" or "Installing snap y" etc., and the progress bar will
