I started pavucontrol from the terminal and found that meters work.
However, when started from the menu they don't. On further
investigation, I found that the desktop file lists pavucontrol-qt rather
than pavucontrol as the executable. I am not sure why there are two
items called the same thing. In
** Package changed: pavucontrol (Ubuntu) => pavucontrol-qt (Ubuntu)
