I also have to say that's this is not related to suspend for me. It's
never work.

Hi,
I've a first gen macbook. With the last two versions of Ubuntu the
backlight control with F1/F2 worked great. I installed a fresh Hardy
beta and I never could get it work. When I push on F1 or F2 i see the
little "messagebox" as susually but the bar is always empty.

Unfortunately there hasn't been a reply in this bug for more than a month. I
close it until someone else has the same bug. Feel free to reopen this bug when
you've got more information.
