The problem persists with linux-image-5.8.0-48.
In order to keep the working version 5.8.0-44 installed, I issued 'sudo
apt-mark hold linux-image-5.8.0-44-generic' for the moment.

@sm8ps: Reverting to 5.8.0-44 *is* in fact a workaround for me.
