Same problem on Ubuntu 9.10. Weird thing is, it's been working for
months and then all the sudden it stopped working.

Audacity 1.3.9 should build with portmixer enabled.

Yes, the speaker and microphone volume control sliders in the Audacity
toolbar do not work in Intrepid -- and did not work in Hardy either. I
always wondered what they were for...

Is this symptom still reproducible in 8.10 or 9.04?
