I'd like this bug to be addressed too. FWIW, although I haven't tried to
build a .deb package, I can compile Labplot on Hardy/386 without
problems using its configure make.

I tried compiling 1.6.0 on Ubuntu hardy (and updating some libraries to fulfill
the build-deps), but it explodes.
Guess it won't be that easy to backport. Output is below.

If there are specific important bugs to fix for Hardy we can do a Stable
Release Update (SRU) but I think there are way too many changes to just
sync from Debian for Hardy.
