Basically, video graphics driver bugs are causing the X server to crash
on logout. Since this report has accumulated comments from many people
with several different hardware sets, it would be best to close this
bug, and open up new reports against the video drivers if this is still
an issue in Kub
The only thing that helped me to solve this logout problem in GDM was
this.
In System->Pref...->Sounds->Sounds tab
Uncheck the system sounds thro esd.
This will stop the logout process to move forward. Looks like during the
logout process, the logout.wav sound has to be played. Since the

installed. I have an nvidia card with the restricted drivers. The
workaround with TerminateServer=true in /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc works for
me.

instituted as it's likely to get.
I don't know the exact details of the bug process, but does a fix in

Interestingly, a similar bug was opened in 2006: Bug #38915
These bugs may be related, since people are also adding recent reports to that
bug.
As a workaround, a suggestion posted in Bug #38915 seems to work for me:

My system has this bug as well, it has an NVIDIA card using the nvidia-
glx driver. It can restart and shutdown but not log out. Restart X does
not do anyting, Ctrl-Alt-Del required to get the system back. This
happens with KDE3 and 4.

It appears I celebrated to early...
After doing the ldconfig the logout stop working again :(
After installing the xorg and amdcccle the glxgears wouldn't work, complaining
it couldn't find the libGL.so.1.
After doing a ldconfig /usr/lib/libGL.so.1 is pointing to

The new ati driver worked for me as well.
Converted it to .deb using the --buildpkg Ubuntu/hardy, and installed the
xorg-driver-fglrx and the amdcccel.
After that finally i can logout without anything hanging.
I also needed to do and "ldconfig" so OpenGL would work.

Switching kernel back to 2.6.22-14-rt solved this for me.
It occurs in 2.6.24-15-rt and 2.6.22-15 generic
I'm using fglrx ati drivers from repository and compositing effects
