I can confirm that the application uses a lot of cpu load and takes a
long time. However, eventually it finishes when I tested it.

Are you sure that this is the KDE application? The description you gives
sounds very much like the gnome/cups version. Could you please give the
information of Help-About here?

Yes, it is definitely a KDE application. You can start it by running
system-config-printer-kde if you have the package with the same name
installed. And it has no menu at all...
