I believe that this bug has been corrected in Ubuntu hardy
openoffice.org 1:2.4.0-3ubuntu1 so I am marking it as Fix Released. If
after upgrading you continue to have problems with this issue then feel
free to reopen this bug.

This bug has happened again in slightly better circumstances. I have an
archive with theoretically the same file: one corrupted and one good.
File:Save resulted in the bad copy. File:Save as... and saving in a
different location resulted in the good copy.

Unfortunately there was no original source document. The unreadable file
is from saving changes to an existing XLS.
