Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22-14-generic

Wireless works initially and then craps out - maybe after several minutes.
The encryption key no longer shows in iwconfig output for my wireless interface
(wlan0).

I get messages in /var/log/kern.log like:

Apr 4 22:26:00 lin4 kernel: [ 695.272000] iwl4965: Microcode SW error
detected. Restarting 0x82000000.

There appear to be several others related to this (although some of this might
be the LED which doesn't come on on my machine at the moment even though
wireless does work (at least initially):

lsb_release -rd:
Description: Ubuntu 7.10
Release: 7.10

I thought the problem was NetworkManager; but after killing it off and using
wpa_supplicant manually I still get the same type of problem.

So I *think* the problem is iwl4965 kernel module - ie package:
linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22-14-generic

I ended up on this page:
http://www.intellinuxwireless.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=1490
I think after first looking at a debian bug report that was similar
(http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=461924).

Comment #9 on the intellinuxwireless.org page recommended I get the latest
module code and recompile the modules against my kernel.
Which is what I did and everything works smoothly now.

In more detail:
Went to http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Download.
Downloaded compat-wireless-2.6.tar.bz2.
Unpacked - which created folder: compat-wireless-2008-04-04/ with the source
code etc.

Read the instructions and compiled (you need your kernel headers
istalled obviously before you do this).

The new modules get installed into: /lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/updates/
ie the module for my system:
/lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/updates/drivers/net/wireless/iwlwifi/iwl4965.ko

I think the script moves the old wireless modules into a subdirectory
(ie the ones not in the 'updates' section).

I ran depmod -a; then did a modprobe on the new iwl4965 and it worked.
No more error messages and no more dropouts.

If I'm right about this, then I think you guys really really really need to put
through some kind of patch. It just looks bad when something sort of works and
then falls over and then you have to trudge upstairs and plug a blue cable into
your machine. And even now, I avoid gnome NetworkManager even though it may
not have been the culprit.
If I'm not right about this then... I guess it's red-face time.

This may be similar to another bug for iwl4965 #194091.

Daniel Bush
