sudo apt-get install build-essential
if you have installed build essential then you can install the fix, just
open the map in konsole and do make > sudo make install and then restart
and you have your wlan.

I found a way to get it working on Kubuntu 8.10, you have to compile
madwifi from trunk, it even worked with amd64 which I am using.

I confirm that Atheros AR5007EG does not work with Ubuntu 8.10 final. I
tested it with a live cd yesterday on my laptop LG E500-AP14HS.

As an Asus F5RL user with mentioned ar5007eg, I can confirm this card has
serious issues in GNU/Linux.
For some ndiswrapper works.
For some the patched madwifi driver works.
For some none of these work.
