The fix in hardy-proposed (gvfs-backends 0.2.5-0ubuntu7) appear to be
working just fine here. Thanks!

Thank you for reporting this bug and helping to improve Ubuntu.
I have tested with the current version of GNOME in jaunty and can no
longer reproduce this bug, which was reproducible for me with the 8.04
release. If you experienced this bug in hardy, please test to confirm
that this bug is fixed
it is fixed in Jaunty *and* in Intrepid, but not in Hardy
basically, it is fixed since Gnome 2.24
the problem is: Hardy is LTS and is promoted for enterprise and business
use; this is a serious flaw for inexperienced desktop users; therefore,
it should be fixed also in Hardy (backport the

I can concur with Michael Lueck in the original bug report above: I'm
still seeing identical incorrect functionality, even after the recent
(2008-09-06) updates to SAMBA.

BrianDrab, I think DrC was referring to Ubuntu support rather than
Ubuntu users when they said I will note that no Ubuntu folks have made
a peep about this report.
I did not know that Gnome VFS to GVFS twist. I suppose that is the
reason for other nonsense I see going on. (Mount a Samba share to

FWIW, I did a clean reinstall of 8.04, did the latest updates and used the
latest maintainer version of samba.conf
I am a Ubuntu newbie and the inability to access password protected shared
folders in a Windows network is a HUGE disappointment in this release which is
otherwise very nice.

There is a lot on bug 209520 (about problems when security=user) that
looks very similar.

I'm a little confused Chris (DrC). Most of the responses on this bug
WERE from Ubuntu users including myself. It's already been mentioned
that the problem will exist in any distro that is using the newest
version of Gnome which incorporates GVFS which is a replacement for
Gnome VFS. Ubuntu Hardy
Here is the response from an employee of Canonical. I can't say it
answers your question but I would assume we should keep the bugs open.

Thanks for the note that Fedora 9 is also affected, thus a Gnome

Given that reports have confirmed that this bug can be repro'd on
distros other than Ubuntu, I've opened a new bug in Gnome/Nautilus
referring back to this bug.
See http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=535514 for details.

I've also reported the bug to Canonical (I have a support contract). I
didn't see this post before reporting the issue. Etienne Goyer from
Canonical was able to reproduce it and has escalated it internally
within Canonical so hopefully this will get fixed since a paying
customer is asking as well.
Looks like we now have three bugs that are related/dupes: two in Ubuntu
(launchpad), and one in Gnome (bugzilla).
If BrianDrab/Etienne are driving this from within Canonical, then it
might make sense to close two of these out (Ubuntu 216104 and Gnome
535514) as dupes of the Canonical bug.

I can also confirm this bug (8.04 with all updates installed as of
